Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing (EMDR)

What is Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)?

When someone experiences a traumatic event, it can be difficult for the brain to process information because of such strong overwhelming emotions you’ve experienced.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) works by helping the brain to process traumatic memories and file them away into the past.

This therapy simulates typical eye movements; like those we all experience when we start dreaming or have REM (rapid eye movement) sleep. This helps our brains process negative thoughts from previous traumatic experiences.

This type of talking therapy is not invasive, which means there’s no physical touch between you and your therapist and it’s not a painful or medical procedure.

Why Would I Want EMDR?

EMDR has been shown to help people positively deal with and manage negative thoughts associated with a previous negative trauma; allowing you to be able to process what’s happened and move on.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a psychotherapy that enables people to heal from the symptoms and emotional distress that are the result of disturbing life experiences.

Repeated studies show that by using EMDR therapy people can experience the benefits of psychotherapy that once took years to make a difference. It is widely assumed that severe emotional pain requires a long time to heal. EMDR therapy shows that the mind can in fact heal from psychological trauma much as the body recovers from physical trauma.

How is This Therapy Delivered?

In an EMDR session, you’ll be asked to focus on the upsetting event and your fully trained therapist will begin sets of side-to-side eye movements, sounds or taps.

You’ll be asked to notice what comes to mind after each noise, which will be repeated until the event becomes less disturbing to you.
Whilst this therapy is not intrusive, it be an intense and emotional process. You will have full control to stop the therapist at any point if needed and we’ll give you all the support you need too.
